Just like cars, every year computers get smaller, sleeker and better-looking--but that's not the best reason to buy a new one. The truth is, if you're happy, then don't worry about a new one yet. You don't need a high-speed, high-power computer to run MS Word, Quicken or iTunes. However, if your interests lean toward photo editing and archiving, video editing or advanced gaming, then you're going to need more power and more options.

What Internet service should I use?

If cash flow is an issue, then DSL is a good bet ($14.95 - $30 per month). If you're willing to pay extra for speed, then your local cable company's broadband service could be the option for you (typically $30 - $50 per month). Note that prices vary by region and service.

Does my computer need a lot of memory?

An average user with Windows XP will need 512 MB to 1 GB. Windows Vista needs 1 GB but 2 GB is preferable.

Can I control what my children see?

Parental control software such as Norton Internet Security Suite with Parental Controls (retails at $69 but can be purchased for less) or Besafe.com ($49 per year) can help you. Prices may vary.

What about home or small businesses?
